Biography

Born in Siracusa 4 July 1948, Francesco Siliato graduated in Political Science from the University of Urbino in 1971 with a thesis on "cybernetic law". Journalist and student of mass communications and advertising, he is also an analyst of the politics and economy of the media and information systems. He has developed original models of content analysis research. He analyses the behaviour of media consumer and the development of television programming. Siliato was one of the founders of "Index - critical archive of the information society" and created the Information Report and The Communication Index, a newsletter on the information system. He is a contributor to the magazine "Alfabeta" and created and produced "Electronic Mass Media Age", the specialised review on electronic media and advertising distributed to the media departments of advertising agencies and programme directors of television and radio stations. He has taught at the school of journalism at the European Design Institute of Milan. He is a member of the International Institute of Communications (I.I.C.) and a partner, with Clelia Pallotta, in the Studio Frasi, which produces classifications of TV programmes, audience analysis, training courses, content analysis, consultency in communication marketing and analysis of the economics of the media and the information system.

During the 1994 electoral campaign, he directed an observatory on the strategy of television networks. Editor of "Medialogo" magazine, contributor to the quarterly "Problemi dell'informazione" and director the Sole 24 ORE weekly "Zapping"m he has also worked on programmes for RaiTre MediaMente and lectures on the theory and practice of mass communication at the Milan Polytechnic.
