Biography

Giampaolo Sodano joined RAI in 1966. He left the public service broadcaster to enter parliament as a member of the Italian Socialist Party during the 1983-1987 parliament, returning as the first president of SIPRA, the advertising sales arm of RAI. From 1989 to 1993 he was director of Raidue where he promoted fiction as the backbone of the schedule, acquiring a number of American soap operas, including his greatest success, "Beautiful" (The Bold and the Beautiful).

In 1993 he was appointed director of SACIS, the RAI subsidiary for product sales, and in 1994 became director of productions, coproductions and acquisitions. Sodano left RAI for the commercial TV company Mediaset, where he was director of Canale 5 until 1997. He is the author of "La nascita di venere. La televisione e le cattedrali elettroniche".
