Biography

Archaeologist specialising in Punic and Phoenician culture, Sabatino Moscati was instrumental in bringing new archaeological findings to the general public.

Born in Rome in 1923, Moscati discovered the Punic city of Monte Sirai in Sardinia, as well as a series of fortresses of the Punic era in Tunisia, Sicily and other regions in the Mediterranean basin.Before Moscati's discoveries, knowledge of Punic civilisations of the 2nd and 3rd Centuries BC was limited, being largely overshadowed by interest in the Roman and Etruscan civilisations.

Member and then president of the prestigious Lincei Academy, Moscati was a firm believer in popularising science.In 1985 he founded and wrote for Archeo, a monthly magazine which aimed to make archaeology comprehensible to the general public. He also published a series of articles in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

Sabatino Moscati died in Roma 8th September 1997 at the age of 74.
