Biography

Born in Brooklyn in 1929, Joseph studied organic chemistry. A successful businessman with great experience in both technology and management, he is president of Coates & Jarratt, Inc., which he founded in 1979. The research organisation is committed exclusively to the study of the future, helping clients (companies, interest groups, and all levels of government) to find new opportunities and plan solutions for their problems.

Mr Coates frequently lectures on both the technical and philosophical aspects of the future and is an adjunct professor at George Washington University, where he teaches graduate courses on technology and the future.

He is a regular contributor to Technological Forecasting and Social Change and Research and Technology Management, and co-author of 2025: Scenarios of U.S. and Global Society Reshaped by Science and Technology (Oakhill Press, 1997), Futurework (Jossey Bass, 1990), What Futurists Believe (World Future Society, 1989) and Issues Management; How You Can Plan, Organize, and Manage for the Future (Lomond, 1986).

He was a program manager of research at the National Science Foundation and was assistant to the director and head of exploratory research at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. He was also on the editorial board of the Encyclopedia of the Future (MacMillan, 1996). back to the top
