Born in Monza in 1952, Canali worked initially as a painter. At the beginning of the
1980s he began to integrate electronic elements into his work and in 1985 founded the
electronic art research group CorrentiMagnetiche with the musician Riccardo Sinigaglia, in
what became a lasting partnership: Canali's work always pays particular attention to the
association of sound and image. In 1992 he began to work with virtual reality, his chosen
medium for deepening the aspect of his poetics by which each work tries to establish a
particularly individual, intimate contact with its interlocutor - for example the Sartori
installation, which received an award at the Video Art Festival of Locarno. The technical
virtuosity makes his work visibly simple and extremely pure - as in Gates, which received
the Prix Ars Electronica of Linz in 1988. |
