His most recent research activities, carried out with institutes and research bodies such as the Service for the Quality Control of Programmes Broadcast by RAI and the Gemelli Musatti Institute of Milan, include: a study of the concept of cultural television in Europe, aimed at defining the category on the basis of the televisual reality and the theoretical debate in four different countries; a study on the theme of the relationship between television, identity, and belonging in three European countries; several studies on the characteristics of the television and radio media, and their ability to create an "intimate" relationship with their audience, both through programming content and through communicative strategies and techno-linguistic modalities; the widespread presence of programmes based of "reality TV".

Gianfranco Bettetini has also frequently written and directed for RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana, and has a wide experience as a theatre director. He has been visiting professor at the Universities of Lodz, Katowice and Cracow (Poland), UNAM (Mexico City), Piura (Peru), and Pamplona (Spain). He is a member of the scientific council of the Gemelli Musatti Institute for the problems of communication, and responsible for the Socrates programme which involves Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

He contributes to the review "Semiotica" and with Thomas Sebeok's working group at the University of Indiana (USA). In 1992 he was responsible, with G. Tinazzi, for the permanent activities of the Cinema Department of Venice Biennale, where he was also creator and curator of the "Reale Virtuale" exhibition.
