Biography

Luigi Berlinguer is Minister of Education in the Prodi government. He was born in 1932 in Sassari where he still lives, and is rector of the University of Siena since 1985. A member of the Upper Council of Education and General Secretary of the University Rectors Conference, he was also administrator of the Monte dei Paschi of Siena.

He was provincial councillor for Sassari in 1950, and has been mayor of the council of Sensori (SS). Berlinguer was first elected to parliament in 1963 when he stood for the Italian Communist Party in the constituency of Cagliari. He is currently a member of the PDS (Democratic Party of the Left).

During the XI legislature he was nominated Minister of Universities and Scientific Research in the Ciampi government, but resigned the day after being appointed when the Chamber of Deputies annulled the authorisation for legal proceedings against Bettino Craxi. He was re-elected to parliament in Tuscany for the "Ulivo" (Olive) group for the constituency of central Florence. back to the top
