Biography

Born in Hudiksvall in Sweden in 1952, Sundström is married with two children.

In 1975 he completed his studies in economics, political science, social and economic geography and company administration at the University of Umeå. In 1975-76 he worked with the local administration of Piteå and from '76 to '79 with the tourist association of the county of Norrbotten. He was elected to the local council of Piteå, and in 1979 was made responsible for employment for the county of Norrbotten. In 1989 he was appointed to the municipal committee of Piteå. From 1983 to 1992 he worked for the National Forest Enterprise.

In 1989 he was elected president if the municipal executive of Piteå, and was also elected president of the Social Democratic Party of Norrbotten. In 1990 he became an executive member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. From '91 to '92 he was on the administrative council of the mining company LKAB. He was the Social Democratic Party's spokesman for industry and commerce from 1991 to 1994.

Minister of Labour in the Swedish government from 1994 al 1996, he has been Minister of Commerce and Industry since 1996.
