Biography

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Thomas A. Ohanian has a BS degree in Film and Broadcasting from Boston University and an Masters in Instructional Technology from Rhode Island College.
He is an accomplished film editor, inventor, and published author.

In 1989, Mr. Ohanian joined Avid Technology, a start-up computer software company formed to create computer-based film and video software editing systems. Ohanian was the first editor and 8th employee at Avid. He joined the company in January 1989 and was responsible for research and design of the Avid/1 Media Composer, digital nonlinear editing system. He is now Chief Editor, responsible for input and design concentrating on the editing and effects products.

The Avid Media Composer has revolutionized the field of professional video editing, replacing the use of videotapes with digital hard disks. Today, digital nonlinear editing, and the Avid Media Composer is the standard video editing system for the professional video post-production industry. Over 80% of US television commercials and 70% of prime-time programs are created on this system, as well as countless television and news programs around the world. For 100 years the basic aspects of film editing had remained unchanged. With the invention of the Avid Film Composer in 1992, in only three years 67% of film editing in Hollywood has switched to digital nonlinear editing technology. Today, the Avid Film Composer is the recognized leader in supplying creative tools and technology to the film industry.

He has traveled extensively conducting, participating in, and organizing panel and roundtable discussions throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Mr. Ohanian has received numerous awards. In 1994, he was recognized with an EmmyR award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In 1995, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an Academy AwardR for the invention of the Avid Film Composer. In 1998, he received a second EmmyR award for the co-invention of Avid's Multicamera Editing System and in February 1999, the Avid Film Composer will be recognized and awarded the OscarR statuette for its impact on film-making.

Mr. Ohanian is an accomplished author, having written the acknowledged industry guidebook, Digital Nonlinear Editing: Editing Film and Video on the Desktop, 1997 Focal Press, and Digital Nonlinear Editing: New Approaches to Editing Film and Video, 1992, Focal Press. He is also the co-author of Digital Film-making: The Changing Art and Craft of Making Motion Pictures, 1995, Focal Press.

Mr. Ohanian also regularly serves as a Digital Post-Production Supervisor specifically in the area of Independent Films, working with first-time and independent directors to design and implement a digital post-production work flow for filmmakers who are interested in using digital techniques in creating and bringing their films to market. His film experience in 35mm and 16mm includes award winning PSAs for the American Cancer Society and television documentaries including the nationally televised, The Armenian Genocide: 1894-1896, 1915-1919 for which he served as Director/Editor. Prior to joining Avid Technology, Mr. Ohanian edited and composited over 600 national and regional commercials on film, 2" Quadruplex tape, 1", and digital videotape/disk.
