Biography
Born in Viareggio 10th June 1933, Ansaldo Giannarelli graduated in law with a thesis
entitled "The public administration of the film industry". From 1953 to 1954 he
was assistant to the director M.Monicelli and in 1963 participated in C.Zavattini's
collective film I misteri di Roma. He has directed over 40 short films, including: 16
OTTOBRE 1943 (1960 - nominated for an Academy Award); Diario di bordo (1966, co-director -
nastro d'argento 1967); Il bianco e il nero (1966); Analisi del lavoro (1971); Linea di
montaggio (1971); Veleni d'Italia (1976); un film sul PCI (1979); Il rococú nei vicoli
(1982); Roma occupata (1984); Aspromonte: sentieri d'autunno e d'inverno (1996)
He has also directed full-length films for the cinema and television: Sierra Maestra
(1969 officially invited to the XXX Venice Film Festival); NON HO TEMPO (1972 - theatrical
version shown at the "Semaine de la critique" of the Cannes Festival in 1973 -
television version in three parts); Immagini Vive (1974 - which received a special mention
at the 27th Prix Italia 1975); Resistenza, una nazione che risorge (1976 - an
archive-based film); Remake (1987 - presented out of competition at the 40th Locarno
Festival); Berlinguer, La Sua Stagione (1988 - an archive-based film for home video)
He has directed numerous television programmes (educational, cultural, fiction,
theatre-documentaries, etc.) including: Ragioniamo con il cervello (1971 - a 6 part
documentary); Uomini della scienza (1977 - a series of 5 episodes); Elogio di Gaspard
Monge fatto da lui stesso (1977 - part of the series "Uomini della scienza");
Versilia: gente del marmo e del mare (1980 - a two-part experimental programme which was
never broadcast); Come parla il cinema italiano (1981 - a 6 part documetnary); La
"follia" di Zavattini (1981 - a special on LA VERITA'AAA byC.Zavattini);
Tradimento (1985 - theatre documentary); Nel Regno del Sud (1986 - theatre documentary)
He has been responsible for live television broadcasts of special events (Teleconfronto
1988) and has initiated and directed numerous audiovisual events (Festival Internazionale
Cinema Giovani di Torino).
He has also worked in advertising (Perugina, Poretti, Facis, etc.) and industrial
cinema (Fiat, Pfizer, Eni).
He lectures and woks as a audiovisual consultant. From 1996 to 1999 he taught
"cinematographic documentaries" and "the theory and techniques of
cinematographic language" at DAMS, (Dipartimento Musica e Spettacolo) at the
University of Bologna.
