Biography

Born in 1948 in Arnstadt, Germany, Wenzel graduated in law from the University of Mainz in 1972. After three years of post-graduated training in the Rheinland Pfalz Land, he worked as a lawyer until 1977. In 1977 he was appointed spokesman for the German Budget Minister. From 1980 to 1983 he was responsible for GATT at the permanent representation of the German Republic in Geneva.

From 1983 to 1984 he was personal assistant to the Minister Otto Graf Lambsdorf, and from 1984 to 1986 to Martin Bangemann. From 1987 to 1988 he was director of the minister's office. In 1989 he was appointed deputy head of the cabinet of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Martin Bangeman, and became head of the cabinet in 1992.
