Biography
Computer networking pioneer Bob Metcalfe writes a weekly column about the
Internet for InfoWorld's 310,000 qualified subscribers. He invented the Ethernet
local-area network in 1973 and founded 3Com Corporation in 1979.Just before joining
InfoWorld in 1992, He was a visiting fellow in the Computer Laboratory at the University
of Cambridge, England where he started writing for magazines and newspapers.
His writing led him to a successful two and a half year stint as
Publisher/CEO of InfoWorldPublishing Company. Since 1993 he has been IDG Vice President
Technology, a technology journalist who often speaks at information technology
conferences.This June, Metcalfe was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor for his exemplary and
sustained leadership in the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet.
Today, over five million Ethernets connectover 50 million computers around the world. Many
of these are on the Internet. |

Metcalfe is Conference Chair for ACM97: The Next 50 Years of Computing,San Jose
Convention Center, March 1-5, 1997. ACM97 celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the
Association for Computing Machinery. Metcalfe describes ACM97 as "an all-plenary
program, looking ahead at the next 50 years of information technology and its impacts on
society." As conference chair, he leads in developing a lineup of visionary speakers,
a futuristic expo, and an associated book entitled, "Beyond
Calculation".Metcalfe is president-select of the MIT Alumni Association and a member
of the MIT Board of Trustees. |
