Biography
Born in Adlershot in 1948, the novelist Ian McEwan is known for his disquieting style.
His collection of short stories "First Love, Last Rites", dealing with the
problems sexual initiation, won the Somerset Maugham Award. The themes of sex and
perversion are also present in his subsequent works as a metaphor for a world dominated by
an existential and moral void, where even children are denied innocence. His 1997 novel,
The Child in Time won the Whitbread Prize for Fiction.
As well as novels and short stories he has written several screenplays and published
many articles. |
