Biography
Born in Bibbiena (Arezzo) in 1920, Giovanni Giovannini graduated in law from Turin
University with a thesis on international law and has been President of the Italian
Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FIEG) since 1976. He has worked for many years for the
Italian daily "La Stampa", as journalist, special correspondent, deputy editor,
managing editor and president (from February 1976 to October 1982) and is currently a
director. He is also a director of the advertising agency Publikompass.
In 1968 he founded the "Centro studi sul giornalismo Gino Pestelli" (Gino
Pestelli Journalism Centre), a Turin-based non-profit making organisation of which he is
still president. The Centre works with universities and research institutes in Italy and
abroad, promoting research into the history of journalism and the problems facing the
publishing industry. From April 1985 to July 1994 he was president of the Italian press
agency ANSA, of which he is still a director, and since 1983 he has been president and
lecturer at the 'Higher School of Journalism of LUISS (Libera Università
Internazionale Studi Sociali).
In 1983 he founded "Gutenberg 2000", which has published numerous books on
communications and the media and two journals of which Giovannini is editor: Media
Duemila, a monthly on communications and electronic news, and líEditore, a
monthly on information and documentation. From May 1988 to May 1990 he was president of
the International Federation of Newspaper Editors. He was named Knight of the Gran Croce
of the Italian Republic by President Scalfaro, and on May 12, 1992, Knight of the French
Legion of Honour. |
